James Rush was a Norfolk farmer, land agent and auctioneer. Rushed owned Potash Farm which was mortgaged for £5000 to Isaac Jermy, who lived at Stansfield Hall.  Jermy gave notice to foreclose on November 30th 1848.  On the 28th November 1848 Rush entered Stansfield Hall and shot Jermy, and his son dead, he wounded his daughter in law and the housemaid.  It was shown at the trial that he had forged Jermy's signature to a document by which Jermy gave him absolute ownership of Potash Farm.

Emily Sandford was James Rush' mistress, he promised to marry her if she bore him a child.  It was Emily Sandford's evidence that helped to convict Rush.  The Judge passing sentence remarked

"If you had performed your promise to that unfortunate girl to make her your wife the policy of the law, that seals the lips of a wife in any proceeding against her husband, might have prevented the appearance of a material witness against you"

Rush was hanged on the bridge over the moat at Norwich Castle on April 21st 1849.  He was buried in prison walls.
